• Se eu tivesse estudado para a prova, eu teria passado.
If I had studied for the test, I would have passed!!
• Se o Neymar tivesse jogado, o Brasil não teria perdido.
If Neymar had played, Brazil wouldn’t have lost.
The third conditional describes the result of something that might have happened but didn't (in the past) and imagines the result of this situation.
There are 4 different types of conditional sentences
Each expresses a different degree of probability that a situation will occur or would have occurred under certain circumstances.
If you had told me you needed a ride, I would have left earlier. ( I was capable of leaving early but did not)
If I had cleaned the house, I could have gone to the movies. (I was capable of cleaning the house but did not)
We make the third conditional by using the past perfect after 'if' and then 'would have' and the past participle in the second part of the sentence:
- If he had studied, he would have passed the exam (but, really we know he didn't study and so he didn't pass)
- If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick (but I did eat a lot, and so I did feel sick).
- If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't have missed the plane
- They wouldn't have been tired if they had gone to bed earlier
- She would have become a teacher if she had gone to university
- We would have been on time for the interview if we had left the house at nine
